名词术语
The Treaty of Waitangi : The Treaty was signed between the chiefs of the Maori people and the British Crown in 1840. It has three articles. Under the first article, the Maori people gave the Queen of England the right to make laws for the country; the second article promised the Maori “tino rangatiratanga” over their lands, forests fisheries and other treasured possessions; Under the third article Maoris were granted all the rights and privileges of British subjects.
Tino rangatiranga : It means the full exclusive undisturbed possession over the lands, forests, fisheries and other treasured possession.
Maoritabga : Maoritanga is Maoriculture, the Maori way of life and view of the world. It is a growing and changing part of life in New Zealand .
Marae : The marae include the meeting house and the landaround it. It is the focus of Maori life. The whole marae functions on democratic principles which have developed from the strict rules that governed traditional life. Now, the multi-tribal marae have been built in many towns and cities. The traditional marae has been adapted to modern circumstances with great success.
Governor—General : Governor—General who is a New Zealander reprents Queen Elizabeth II in New Zealand . The present Governor-General is a woman. The Governor-General has very little real power, but provides continuity when governments change and has an important national role as representative of the monarch.
Continuing education : continuing education is provided by university extension departments, the WEA, polytechnics, community institutes and secondary school, the correspondence school and the Open Polytechnic which offers instruction is over 940 technical subjects. There is widespread attendance at night classes and weekend seminars on a wide range of subjects, including economics, pottery, politics, time management and a huge variety of other subjects.
